The theme of the 2020 national conference organized by the Zakir Husain Delhi College was ‘Translation: Theory, Context and Praxes.’ It was as part of this conference that Shailee presented her paper, ‘Hindi’s Resistance to Translation of Queer.’

This paper examines how Hindi’s lack of neuter gender affects the translation of non-binary English pronouns like ‘they.’ It argues that this linguistic gap reflects broader heteronormative structures in Indian society which can marginalize non-binary identities. By analyzing the translation challenges and their implications, the study sheds light on how Hindi’s resistance to gender-neutral language impacts the recognition and rights of the LGBTQ+ community in India.
